Virtual Reality School: Lecture VR coming soon to a computer near you

As online schools, course management systems like Moodle, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), and other educational online endeavors take on larger roles in the educational framework, virtual reality has a possibility to have a serious impact in their futures. I’ve mentioned this before but if you’ve read Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One, then you have an image of what the future of education could be with virtual reality in the mix. And aside from the depressive dystopian world described in the book, the possibilities that he envisions with giving any child access to high quality education is a jump that could be realized within the next 50 years (conservatively speaking).

Immersive VR Education is bringing us a step closer to that reality with their new in-alpha testing program, Lecture VR. “Imagine sitting in a lecture room with Einstein as he talks about the Theory of Relativity. Now imagine as you sit in this room atoms and planets begin appearing just in front of you as Einstein is trying to explain in words the ideas and theories he has so vividly and visually in his mind” (Lecture VR website). Lecture VR allows you to experience a course with a lecturer as they guide you through immersions of abstract concepts or take you out into the field with them. As a teacher, you have the ability to design what Immersive VR Education calls “an immersive Powerpoint presentation”. While an immersive Powerpoint doesn’t actually sound that sexy, the end result is pretty awesome. Check out their promotional video and see what’s in store for yourself. I can’t wait to start learning!
